DARK PLACES

Being a current resident of Shreveport, I picked this book up because I heard it was being filmed in town. Sadly, I didn’t run into any of the cast while they were filming, but I was able to pick up the book at the library. It was a pretty quick read despite it’s size because the plot is so twisted and gripping. Gillian Flynn is truly a genius for creating the insane web of mystery that she did. This movie will definitely be a nail biter.

What it’s about: Libby Day was seven when her mother and sisters were killed in a horrible murder. Libby escaped the house just in time, only losing a few fingers and toes while in hiding. Eight years later, Libby sat in court and told the jury that her brother, Ben was responsible. Twenty-five years later, Libby’s trust is running low, and she find the Kill Club, a club obsessed with finding the true story behind some of the ugliest murders, including Libby’s family. Libby comes up with a plan to profit off the Kill Club and comes face-to-face with some of the key players in Libby’s family’s murders, and with each person, pieces of the puzzle start to fall together.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

As a proud Potthead, I squealed when I saw the news of JK Rowling writing a screenplay for this book. Even though this movie will have nothing to do with the cast that I, and so many others, have fallen in love with- I can’t wait to journey back to the magical land that I wish I were a part of. I know JK Rowling will not disappoint with this movie trilogy. While no cast or director has been announced yet, I know that the movie will be absolutely brilliant.

What it’s about: This book is actually a textbook required to be had by all first years attending Hogwarts. The movie will be set several decades before Harry Potter’s time and will follow Newt Scamander, the book’s author.

Release date: 2016

ELEANOR & PARK

I’ve heard so many great things about Rainbow Rowell’s novels, and I knew that I had to jump on that bandwagon. This book is a traditional love story of an unlikely pair told in a unique way. It’s hard not to fall in love with this YA novel. Rainbow Rowell will be writing the screenplay for the movie, which makes me have high hopes for it.

What it’s about: The novel takes place in 1986 and tells the story of Eleanor, a redheaded girl who’s not exactly skinny, and Park, an Asian boy who’s not exactly popular. Eleanor is the new girl at school, and on her first day on the bus, Park is the only one willing to let her sit with him. Their relationship slowly (very slowly) escalates from there in untraditional ways.

Release date: Unknown; set to start shooting in 2015

SISTERHOOD EVERLASTING

I picked this book up on a whim- It was on sale, and I love the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series. I was so excited to read this book, because it was set several years after the previous novels, which gave me hopes in relating to their lives even more, having grown up with the books. It’s up in the air as to whether or not the girls will reprise their roles, but I don’t think the movie would be the same if they didn’t return for Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3.

What it’s about: This book takes place several years after the previous novels. All of the girls have gone their separate ways and no longer keep in touch. They’re all happy with their lives, but they know something is missing: each other. Carmen is a successful actress in New York, engaged to be married; Lena is living in Rhode Island, hiding behind her art; Bridget is living a carefree life in San Francisco with Eric. Tibby is the one who reaches out to the girls, buying everyone plane tickets for a much-needed reunion, and the reunion changes them and their friendships in ways they couldn’t have imagined.

CINDERELLA

We’ve heard the story told time and time again, but it’s impossible to get tired of it. If you’ve seen the movie trailer, I’m sure you were frustrated. All it shows is a glass slipper with the release date at the bottom. While most (if not all) of us know what Cinderella is about, we know that the movie will be told differently than it has been in the past, so seeing an actual trailer would have made us more excited. Alas, we’re left with a simple glass slipper.

What it’s about: If you don’t know, then read Grimm’s Fairy Tales or just rewatch the Disney movie.

Release date: March 2015

MACBETH

If you weren’t required to read this play while you were in school, then you definitely missed out. While Macbeth is not my favorite play by William Shakespeare (that spot is reserved for A Midsummer Night’s Dream), it still has a lot of drama and craziness that will keep any reader entertained. Many movies and TV shows quote this play, and a lot of people don’t even know where the quotes originated from, i.e. “something wicked this way comes” and “double, double toil and trouble.”

What it’s about: Macbeth is a tragedy that tells the story of a man who sees three witches that tell him he will become the King of Scotland. His impatience to become king and his wife’s hunger for power leads him to kill the current king, which causes him great grief and paranoia.

Release date: 2015

THE BFG

I adored The BFG when I was younger. I think we all know Roald Dahl is a genius, and this book was one of my favorites written by him. The movie will be directed by Steven Spielberg, and we all know what that means – guaranteed awesomeness.

What it’s about: Sophie is having trouble falling asleep, and when she looks to her window, she sees a giant across the street. Spotting Sophie, the giant reaches in through her bedroom window and carries her to his home. He reveals himself as the Big Friendly Giant, telling Sophie that he gets children’s nightmares and collects good dreams to be distributed to other children. Meanwhile, fellow giants are eating humans. Sophie convinces the BFG to visit the Queen of England to see if she can put a stop to what the giants are doing.

Release date: July 2016

FRANKENSTEIN

And no, I’m not talking about the movie that came out earlier this year called I, Frankenstein. This movie adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel is going to star Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy, which means I’ll be first in line to see it when it hits the big screen. I read this novel when I was a senior in high school and enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. I may even give it a re-read before going to see the movie.

What it’s about: We all know the tale, or at least the Scooby-Doo version. Frankenstein tells the story of an eccentric scientist named Victor Frankenstein who creates a creature in an unusual science experiment.
